I won’t say it’s been easy coming from a well established community like Brighton to a brand new community like Preston. However I feel that there are similarities. Everyone has been nothing but friendly and helpful and I have been made to feel very welcome.
Perhaps this has to do something with the fact that I am the Chef and provide 2 (good?) cooked meals a day.

We have not been without our problems as a new community but thanks to good management and a great core group of experienced companions we have managed to not only open our retail outlet on time, but have exceeded all expectations in our first couple of weeks trading.

Since arriving here I have learnt more about how Emmaus works and particularly about solidarity. Other communities, both near and far, have been very kindly helping us get up and running, be it through donating goods to sell or lending us companions.
Thanks for the help Graeme and <a href="" title="It's Grim Up North" rel="bookmark"" >Nick. To me Preston is proof that Emmaus works.

On Elections Day, a memorable and maybe historical day in the history of the US.

Our presentation was highly successful and mainly because the present Rotary Club Members could see what Emmaus can do for the people who join us.
At a time first polling results are expected, results which might decide much of the international political atmosphere for the next 3.5 years, there is one big message to take from the American electoral campaign by Barack Hussein Obama. A message of huge importance for our companions, for every homeless person around the globe.

The USA, a country, a superpower, with a battered global reputation is a country of big opposites, immense contrasts. A black and white country, split by the war on terror, poverty, military expenses and a failing social system as very accurately described in the article An enigmatic country elects a new president by Der Spiegel’s Chief of Foreign Desk, Gerhard Spörl:

America is a superpower around the globe, but a Third World country at home, with an infrastructure that defies description. There are collapsing bridges, power failures along the entire East Coast, and homes in places like Florida, North Carolina and Texas are regularly destroyed every year by hurricanes that flatten houses as if they were beach bungalows in Haiti.

Yes, the most obscene aspect of all remains the unacknowledged racism in this country of pragmatic enlightenment — the ongoing prejudices of whites against blacks.

The aim of this entry is not to express any kind of hatred towards the USA or his leaders[1], but to realize that even potential world leaders must believe, believe in the same way as homeless people when they join Emmaus.

Yes, We Can!

For more than a year Barack Obama has shown an admirable sense of believe, believe in himself and in the nation and the outcome of todays election becomes minor considered to the heap of fate it takes to fight the institution, the curse of race and colour and come up against the wife of a former president who was hugely influential when Bill Clinton was President of the USA.

At Emmaus Preston we want to offer every person who joins us the the believe that homelessness only a stage in their life is. That their is hope.

Hope

Hope for a life after homelessness. The Emmaus Preston Team believes in self-deployment of companions and will do everything to allow, stimulate the personal development of companions. Whether it is by supporting companions to grow within Emmaus Preston, help them to move on within the Emmaus UK mouvement or support them to start college courses and come out with a qualification, degree. Helping people would not be really helping if we would not offer our companions the opportunity to progress, progress in life.
Just like following voter’s testimony shows, there will always be hope in life:

My polling place is at the fairgrounds in Southern Maryland, about 40 minutes from Washington, D.C. This used to be tobacco country, but is slowly being developed, or other crops are grown. We waited until 10:00 to vote, to avoid the lines. When we got there a 97-year-old Black man was being wheeled out of the polls in his wheelchair. It was the first time he had ever voted in his life. When he came outside he asked if anyone could give him an Obama button. There were none left at the Democrat’s booth so I gave him mine. He was so proud and I started crying. He looked at me and said, “why are you crying? this is a day for glory.” I am still crying.

Emmaus Preston does not endorse Barack Obama, or John McCain for that matter, but the message Obama delivered, strong enough to convince the 97-year-old man in his wheelchair to vote for the first time in life, is a strong one.
At Emmaus we don’t want to sugarcoat or embellish things, say how great our concept and team is[2], but we believe in the companions. We believe in the power, the dynamics created by formerly homeless people. The Emmaus road is paved with success stories: an amazing mouvement which grew thanks to the commitment of many companions and opened many great and cheap second hands shop around the country as well as the story of several companions who moved back in to professional life or companions who grew within the Emmaus mouvement and became staff members[3].

Yes there is hope!

Yes, we can!

Companions can!

Emmaus does not take political stances

Both are amazing!

Prime examples of this are Matthew at Brighton who became Community Leader and our own Franky who once was a companion in Mossley and now is our Deputy Community Leader and Business Manager

I’ve been made welcome, I’ve been the brunt of jokes and I’ve been well fed. I’ve been put on the wash up and cleaning rotas.

I think one of the advantages of a smaller community is that the peer support is tighter, eg. everybody knows who everybody is, in a larger community I think you can sometimes get caught up in the small cog/large machine situation where as with less companions it seems as a more evenly spaced work ethic (less space for the shirkers to shurk). The disadvantages as I see them are that there are maybe fewer, and I hesitate to use the word, cliques or peer groups. So I would imagine that someone, new to Emmaus Preston, who isn’t of an outgoing nature may suffer for a little bit until they find their feet.

I know comparisons are odious but at Emmaus Brighton we seem sometimes to have an influx of people whereas here it seems there is sometimes an influx of jobs.

I’ve learnt about myself too as I have had the opportunity to sort of step back and observe the community as opposed to being really involved in the running of the community. I’ve realized how much I take for granted. As the norm in one community could be unrealistic in another.

All in all my stay has been thoroughly enjoyable and an uplifting experience and my thanks go to Eddie, Franky, Paul, Tom, Ian, Graham, Terry, Simon and Vinnie, landlord at The Derby Inn.

But, something is rotten in the state of charity shops.

Anyone who was blind to the dormant credit crunch last year, has been called back to earth and to be honest, the credit credit crunch has been looming since Fannie Mae became under pressure in 1999. In this excellent article from the NYTimes, Peter Wallisons warned us for the dangers of the new form of lending, as introduced by Fannie Mae:

From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,” said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ”If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.”

Today, 9 years later, the crunch has hit the global economy and there seems to be no hiding from the depression. In only one year the Dow Jones has dropped from 14000 points to 8000 and companies with significant cash in their reserves have seen their market cap drop daily for the last 8-10 months. Even the otherwise rather untouchable Silicon valley does not escape the credit crunch.
Fact is the credit crunch is there and it will take several years to recover.

All in all these should be exciting times for charity and second hand shops. Sadly, when having a look at the actual situation and prices at those stores one can only be surprised by the often irrational pricing policies several national groups apply. More than once I have heard from our visitors, customers, that charities such as Oxfam and The British Heart Foundation are way too expensive for their budget.

There is no wrong price™!

At Emmaus Preston we have set out with another pricing policy: there is no wrong price. From the beginning we decided to operate a low price strategy in direct competition with the hardest discounters, because we want our shop to be attractive to those on the lowest incomes. Like other organizations, it would be simple for us to create high overheads and have an expensive pricing strategy, but at the end of the day, we believe in fair pricing[1] and helping those that need it most.

When pricing items in our shop we try not to forget that our stock has been donated free to us and we are very grateful to those who support us with their donations, but even more, we want to ‘add something to Preston’. And one of the things Emmaus brings to Preston is a great shop, accessible to those who need it most!
Obviously as an Emmaus group, we have to think of our costs and make sure the community becomes self-sufficient[2], but even people with low incomes will be able to buy furniture from us.

Credit crunch, what crunch?

The Credit Crunch

Communities are feeling the pinch, with collections falling and furniture trading becoming more difficult in some parts of the country. Strategies to combat the credit crunch include:

Emmaus South Lambeth has converted one of their high street furniture stores into a low price electrical store and has developed a relationship with their local Appliance Reuse Centre (Croydon ARC) to secure stock. They receive small electrical items to be tested for free and also buy fridges for £3 untested and £25 tested. This is filling up their new shop ‘Electrics on the Hill’.

Emmaus Leeds has brokered a deal with Leeds City Council to pick up reusable furniture, bikes and bric-a-brac from 3 of the Civic Amenity Household Waste Sites in Leeds.

Emmaus Sheffield has approached M&S and ‘another posh furniture shop’ in Sheffield who have agreed to give customers information about donating their old furniture to Emmaus when they buy a new piece of furniture.

Emmaus Brighton has struck a deal with ‘The Big Yellow Box’ company – they are called in to collect furniture and goods that have been left by people who no longer pay for their storage.

Depressing Sector News

Debt Advice

There has been a 51% increase in new mortgage and secured loan enquiries in the three months to October and a 10% increase in fuel debts compared with the same period last year, according to the Citizens Advice Bureau. Emmaus Communities have relationships with those organisations that can provide these types of advice services to their customers and local community.

Reserves at risk

Three charities fear they have lost reserves totalling £25m in the wake of the banking collapse in Iceland. Stephen Bubb, head of chief executives body ACEVO, said three members had contacted the organisation with concerns that their reserves in Icelandic bank accounts could be lost. The unnamed organisations held reserves of £11m, £10m and £4m respectively in Icelandic bank accounts.

Upbeat Sector News

Asset Transfer

The Development Trust Association has received £1.3m from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to set up an Asset Transfer unit that will offer free independent advice to both community group and local authorities across England on the viability of transferring council owned buildings to community groups. The unit will be launched in January 2009. 60 Local authorities are said to be working with DTA to develop this scheme.

Take advantage of property crash

The property crash should be regarded as an opportunity to acquire property assets in local communities, according to the Government’s local authority guru. Barry Quirk, chief executive of Lewisham Council and adviser to the Communities and Local Government department. He said that charities faced far less competition for land from private companies and developers than in previous years. Local authorities could be more easily persuaded to sell to the third sector, he said, and councils could end up putting more properties on the market as they struggled to hit fixed targets for capital receipts.

Reconomy

The WRAP fund administered by www.reconomy.org.uk is undersubscribed. If you have any projects that you wish to start (that increase the amount of waste diverted from landfill) that require either consultancy support or interim management resource please get an expression of interest in to ensure a full application can be assessed prior to March 2009. The risk is if it is undersubscribed the Government might try to claw the money back to give to the banks. Experience says money available is up to about £25,000 per application, applications already submitted include requests for funding for: Interim management to set up a Wood Recycling project; A consultant to audit and update H&S policy and procedures; and a Waste Consultant to provide input to the development of a recycling and reuse enterprise.

Building Materials Reuse Centre

Reconomy have funded Bioregional to support the set up a number of Building Material Reuse Centres over the next six months. If you have (or are considering getting) large amounts of space (outside and under cover) and want to understand more about how Bioregional can support you to set up a Building Materials Reuse Centre please contact Jonathon Essex . Tel. 020 8404 4249. Mob. 07801 541 924. Email. jonathan.essex@bioregional.com

Community Enterprise News

Emmaus Preston

Emmaus Preston opened the doors of their shop to the public on Saturday, they raised £1373 on their first day trading. Congratulations!! (Editor’s note: Thanks, Tara :) )

Emmaus Oxford

Since taking over the Furniture Store (a furniture reuse project previously run by Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action (OCVA)), Emmaus Oxford is enjoying Emmaus-afying operations, they have a new van and a new Community Leader. Things have got off to a flying start with revenue up in their first couple of months of trading as Emmaus Oxford. Good news for those Companions who will be taking over the running of the store when they move into the new Community in February next year.

Emmaus Sheffield

Over the summer Emmaus Sheffield developed a partnership with ‘Unite’, a student landlord, to clear left belongings from student flats. This provided the Community with £14,000 in clothes that were ragged and many other nice bric-a-brac and household hold items that are currently being used in Sheffield’s ‘Starter Pack Scheme’ (see below).

The Community was awarded £500 from The Guinness Partnership for the difference it has made to the local community. Emmaus Sheffield have used this money to set up a ‘Starter Pack’ scheme providing households goods such as crockery and light bulbs to those in need who are transitioning into unfurnished accommodation.

The Gardening and Housing Maintenance (house voids turnaround) business is also booming with Emmaus Sheffield submitting a number of additional tenders to different departments within both South Yorkshire Housing and the Guinness Partnership.

Emmaus Village Carlton

Village Carlton managed successfully to coordinate 50 volunteers from Tribal Consulting in painting and decorating their shops and premises without disruption to the normal running of the Community’s thriving business.

Emmaus Brighton

The very productive ‘Goodwill Co Op’ was officially launched on Saturday 17th October. With over 70 volunteers signed up to produce innovative gifts and goodies from unwanted materials, Emmaus Brighton is filling up with contemporary jewellery; funky hand knits; luxury gift cards and stylised furniture. The project is generating the biggest word-of-mouth marketing campaign with many members of the local community visiting the Community for the first time. There has also been much interest from the local press.

Please note there was a full blown ‘porky-pie’ (lie) in the last newsletter. Emmaus Brighton does not currently advertise on the back of buses they just refer to a bus in their adverts “ The No.1 Bus goes to the No.1 store”, listening is a skill that requires continual personal development!

Emmaus Hampshire

Even without a store open yet, Emmaus Hampshire has already landed an amazing business partnership with IKEA. The exact nature of the partnership is being discussed but I understand it is will be very wide-reaching and have a very positive impact on all elements of the Community.

Emmaus Hastings & Rother

Emmaus Hastings & Rother have potentially discovered the secret to operating a full scale waste and recycling site… take a party of councillors and officers from East Sussex Council, Hastings Borough Council and Rother District Council to visit a very inspirational French Community, Emmaus Angers. Emmaus Hastings are working hard to transfer the concept to the UK. Watch this space!!

Helpful resources / information

From 1 October 2008, all properties when sold, built or rented will need an energy performance certificate (EPC).

Emmaus Brighton are applying to Waitrose to be part of their ‘Community Matters’ scheme. Where by the local store works with a local organisation to support them in their charitable objectives. Find a Waitrose near you.

If you are undertaking house clearances get hold of your free Waste Carriers license – a quick reminder from Emmaus Sheffield.

Established in 1985, DISC is an independent North of England based charity that focuses on deprivation and exclusion. DISC is a specialist agency, focusing on people who have fallen through the net of statutory provision and who many agencies struggle to help. Our work is structured into four main areas:

Drug Initiatives: Supporting people to stop using drugs and reduce the harm to themselves and others caused by drug use

Employment Initiatives: Helping people who are disadvantaged in the labour market to get and keep a job

Housing Support Initiatives - Helping people to access and retain appropriate and good quality housing across North of England including Lancashire (Compass floating Support Lancashire)

Children Young People & Families (CYPF): Enabling vulnerable groups to live safely in the community.

In 2007 more than 20000 bloggers joined the discussion. Emmaus Preston will participate this year and discuss the 2008 topic, Poverty, on October 15th.

As a charity daily dealing with the topic of poverty, homeless people joining us and cheap affordable prices for our customers, it was a no-brainer to join the Blog Action Day event. More info can be found on the Blog Action Day website:

One Issue, Thousands of Voices
Global issues like poverty are extremely complex. There is no simple, clear answer. By asking thousands of different people to give their viewpoints and opinions, Blog Action Day creates an extraordinary lens through which to view these issues. Each blogger brings their own perspective and ideas. Each blogger posts relating to their own blog topic. And each blogger engages their audience differently.
